MOUNT GREENWOOD — A bank robber arrested after a holdup Downtown is the same criminal who robbed a Mount Greenwood bank and another in suburban Glen Ellyn, and tried to rob another bank in Irving Park, the FBI said.

Demetrius Witt, 42, was arrested Tuesday after stealing $610 from the Fifth Third Bank at 57 E. Randolph St., according to a criminal complaint provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Witt approached a teller at 9:07 a.m. holding a promotional bank folder and asked open an account. He then pulled a note from the folder that read, "I have a gun" or words to that effect, according to the court documents.

The teller handed a pile of cash to Witt but slipped a tracking device into the bills. He quickly left the bank and was pulled over less than an hour later in an alley at 1736 S. Michigan Ave. with the tracking device, the FBI's complaint said.

Witt was then identified by two tellers at the bank, and he was also caught on Fifth Third's surveillance video, according to FBI filings.

An FBI spokesman also said Witt is also responsible for three other bank robberies, including a robbery at 11:08 a.m. Saturday at the U.S. Bank branch at 11159 S. Kedzie Ave. in Mount Greenwood.

In that case, a man fitting Witt's description wore a green track suit and demanded money, but did not show a gun, according to the FBI's website.

Although wearing different clothes, he is also struck at 1:35 p.m. Sept. 23 at the U.S. Bank branch at 736 Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn, the FBI said.

The FBI also said Witt is responsible for an attempted bank robbery at 9:10 a.m. Sept. 24 at the U.S. Bank branch at 3515 W. Irving Park Road in Irving Park, according to its website.
