WRIGLEYVILLE — The Chicago Cubs have finally taken Joe Maddon's advice to "try not to suck," and fans are so happy they're singing.
On Thursday, musician Joey Busse shared his celebratory "We Don't Suck Anymore" Cubs tribute on Facebook. Within three days, it reached 720,000 views for the Chicago-born, Los Angeles-based musician.
The song, a parody of the Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez hit "We Don't Talk Anymore," celebrates the team's newfound success as it heads into the playoffs Friday.
Even those who don't know the original song will find their toes tapping to the sound of victory as Busse croons that fans "don't really care/ what Epstein's doing tonight/ whatever he did he's doing just right."
He applauds key Cubs players like Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Ben Zobrist before pondering what caused the championship drought for the last 108 years: "The goat, Bartman or Moises Alou's pee?"
"This has to be the season the curse is gone," he says.
The Cubs return to Wrigley Field on Friday for the first game of their National League Division Series against either the San Francisco Giants or New York Mets.
Sing along with the lyrics below:
Refrain:
We don't suck anymore (x3)
Like we used to do.
We don't lose anymore
What was all of that for?
We don't suck anymore
Like we used to do.
Finally we found the ones
We've been looking,
We've been looking for:
Rizzo, Bryant, Zobrist and Lackey.
It's been over 108 years,
What the hell went wrong?
Was it the goat, Bartman,
Or Moises Alou's pee?
Don't really care
What Epstein's doing tonight
Whatever he did he's doing just right
And Maddon don't you dare
Leave us alone
You might be crazy, but you changed the game
And we can't get you out of our brains
So all my Cubs fans say:
(Refrain)
Keep those Ks coming, Jake Arrieta,
And Lester don't skip a beat.
This has to be the season the curse is gone.
Every now and then we get some confidence
That we'll be there in November
We're just all a little afraid
That we'll be wrong.
Don't really care
What Epstein's doing tonight
Whatever he did he's doing just right
And Maddon don't you dare
Leave us alone
You might be crazy, but you changed the game
And we can't get you out of our brains
So all my Cubs fans say:
(Refrain)
Oh David Ross,
We'll never forget you.
And Contreras,
We friggin love you.
