MIDWAY — The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded Midway International Airport two grants to improve safety, according to U.S. Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D-3rd).

One of the grants totals almost $2 million and will be used to rehabilitate more than a mile of runway. A separate grant for $72,000 will help pay for equipment needed to reduce conflicts between aircraft and vehicles operating at the airport.

“Midway Airport serves an important role in national air travel and our regional economy,” Lipinski said in a statement. “This investment will help to ensure that the airport is operating as safely and efficiently as possible.”

The FAA last month awarded a $17.5 million grant to the airport to pay for the soundproofing of neighboring homes. The funding followed recent changes in flight paths around Midway that have resulted in an increase in noise complaints.
