NORTH MAYFAIR — It's not every day a chance comes around to plant a wetland.

The stewards of Gompers Park, 4222 W. Foster Ave., have 1,000 native seedlings they're adding to the park's wetlands area during a fall planting event on Oct. 8.

Nature lovers, gardeners, environmentalists and all-around do-gooders are invited to join the effort, 9-11 a.m. Tools and supplies will be provided, but volunteers should bring water.

Situated along the North Branch of the Chicago River, the Gompers wetland is designed to assist with flood control, sponging up storm water.

Native plants are a vital wetland component, known for their deep roots that draw water well below ground. They also require little maintenance and attract and provide cover for wildlife.

For more information on the planting event, email Julie Newfeld at jlnewfeld@gmail.com.

No registration is needed to participate. Volunteers will meet at the parking lot near Gompers' tennis courts, on Keeler Avenue, south of Foster.
