UPTOWN — Emerald City Coffee will finally open in Uptown Wednesday, according to Ald. James Cappleman (46th).

He announced the coffee shop was opening at a press conference Tuesday for the Wilson "L" station as it reached the mid-way point in its reconstruction effort.

"This will be our fourth independent coffee shop along Wilson," said Cappleman, adding the independent shops drove the Starbucks at Wilson Avenue and Magnolia Avenue to close. "That says so much about what this CTA project has done."

Brian Osborne, the owner of Emerald City Coffee could not be reached to confirm the opening, but an employee at the flagship location at 3938 N. Sheridan Road confirmed the opening.

The shop had planned a grand opening for early September, but a note posted on its window said it was waiting on a city health inspection.

"Once completed, we will open a few days after that (assuming the inspection goes well). Theoretically we could be open by the start of next week, but I would be just as delightfully surprised as you if that were to happen," the note said.

In addition to coffee and traditional espresso drinks, the shop offers: housemade cinnamon rolls, bagels, cookies, muffins, granola bars, sweet rolls and breakfast tacos, the note said.

Osborne signed the lease for the former space of Magnolia Cafe about seven months after it closed.

"We're hoping to offer a limited beer, liquor and wine selection and have an event space," he said at the time. "It's an expanded version of what we're doing" at the original location.
