UPTOWN — Months after the Magnolia Cafe was closed after a burglary, it seems the restaurant has closed for good.

A sign posted on the window by Kuman Group of the former restaurant at 1244 W. Wilson Ave. says the space is now available for rent.

The cafe was opened in December 2001 by chef Kasra Medhat, according to its website.

Signs from Medhat saying that the cafe "will be closed for this evening" have remained since the burglary on Sept. 1. At the time, Medhat told DNAinfo Chicago that thieves "stole everything and destroyed the place."

Witnesses reported seeing several people loading a truck and called police, the restaurant said.

Medhat said via email he wasn't happy with police response to the incident, which led to no arrests, but has moved on, becoming a chef at another restaurant.

The new job is "much less stress, but I do miss my restaurant," Medhat said, adding that he wasn't very optimistic about the area.

"Oh well, hope the new tenants survive. I wish them luck," he said.

"The building maintenance is constant, and the neighborhood will unfortunately never come around in my opinion. I may be wrong, but I gave it 13 years, and it seemed to get worse," he said.
