COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Lincoln Park man has been sentenced to probation for firing shots from the roof of his building earlier this year, drawing a SWAT-team response.

Peter Vitale, 27, pleaded guilty earlier this month to aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Cook County Judge Earl B. Hoffenberg has sentenced Vitale to two years probation, court records show. Vitale will also have to pay $829 in court fees.

According to prosecutors, Vitale was captured on surveillance footage walking through a gym in his building before heading to the roof in the 2700 block of North Pine Grove Avenue about 2:45 p.m. Jan. 31.

Once there, Vitale fired at least nine shots toward nearby buildings before passing a black handgun to an unknown accomplice, who also fired several shots.

Prosecutors offered no motive for the shooting, which resulted in a SWAT-team response near Pine Grove and Wrightwood avenues that afternoon. The area is densely populated and houses several hospitals. Police received multiple 911 calls about a shooter.
