COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Lincoln Park man turned himself in to police after firing nine shots off the roof of his building this weekend, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Peter Vitale, 27, was captured on surveillance footage walking through a gym in the building before heading to his roof in the 2700 block of North Pine Grove Avenue about 2:45 p.m. Sunday, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing Wednesday.
Once there, Vitale fired at least nine shots toward nearby buildings before passing a black handgun to a female accomplice, who also "fired several shots," Scaduto said.
Police are still searching for the woman.
Prosecutors on Wednesday offered no motive for the shooting, which resulted in a SWAT-team response near Pine Grove and Wrightwood avenues Sunday afternoon.
The area is densely populated and houses several hospitals. Police received multiple 911 calls about a shooter.
According to prosecutors, Vitale used his own key card to access the gym and rooftop. Authorities were able to identify the Lincoln Park man via a photo and personal information on his Facebook page.
Police found eight shell cartridges on the roof, prosecutors said.
According to an arrest report, Vitale may have fired a second wave of shots after the woman used the gun. Police contacted Vitale, who turned himself in on Tuesday.
Vitale is charged with reckless discharge of a gun and aggravated discharge of a gun in an occupied building.
His defense attorney on Wednesday said Vitale "sells data analytics" for Spins, 222 W. Hubbard St. Vitale has a valid FOID card, his attorney said, and formerly owned a registered gun. It was not clear if he currently owns a registered gun or if a gun was found in the incident.
Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. on Wednesday ordered Vitale held in lieu of $150,000 bail. Should Vitale post bond, he'll need to surrender any guns in his possession.
