LINCOLN PARK — Bring the whole family to an upcoming walking tour of North Pond Nature Sanctuary where kids can enjoy snacks and games — and even hang out with costumed pond characters.

The first annual tour — set for Oct. 1, from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. — is designed to raise awareness for The Lincoln Park Conservancy's ambitious plan to rehabilitate the 130-year-old nature sanctuary, which could cost at least $12 million.

Proponents of the plan say the nature sanctuary is "not in good health" and needs to be restored.

So far, plans include adding native woodland with a babbling creek, a wooden boardwalk and a playscape for children, as well as new benches and drinking fountains for visitors. The conservancy also wants to install sustainable features so the pond can get clean, healthy water.

In addition to snacks, there will be a magician, face painting, games and a sing along with Mr. Singer at the tour.

Tour-goers are instructed to meet in the park in front of North Pond Restaurant, 2610 N. Cannon Drive — rain or shine.

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. on the day of the tour, but those who pre-register online will get one free child-sized "Walk the Pond" T-shirt while supplies last. More T-shirts will be available to buy at the event.
