LINCOLN PARK — The latest public meeting to discuss updating the North Branch Industrial Corridor, including the hotly-debated Finkl Steel site, has been set.

An open house is scheduled for Sept. 29 at St. John Cantius Church, 825 N. Carpenter St., from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., according to the city's Department of Planning and Development.

Local stakeholders are invited to "share their ideas on the proposed lane use plans to date, which include the concepts of mixed use, “buffer” uses, transportation, river access, job creation and other corridor issues," according to a city newsletter.

Those who wish to attend must RSVP online in advance due to facility requirements.

The meeting is part of the city's six-month process to "modernize" the North Branch Industrial Corridor, an unprecedented plan that would change the look and feel of the area, which includes Lincoln Park and Goose Island.

Through public presentations and interviews, city officials have made it clear that the city supports opening up parts of the corridor, including the Finkl Steel site, to more types of development beyond the industrial.

According to Crain's, Chicago-based developer Sterling Bay is gearing up to buy the Finkl Steel site soon, which would jump-start redevelopment there.

The North Branch Industrial Corridor isn't the only Planned Manufacturing District the city wants to update. The plan is part of a citywide initiative to reevaluate and potentially update all of the city's districts.

The city said districts in Pilsen and Little Village are next.
