NORTH PARK — The North Park community is scheduled for a second round of mosquito spraying Wednesday as part of the city's efforts to combat West Nile virus.

Spraying previously took place Aug. 9.

Wednesday's spraying is scheduled to begin at dusk and continue until approximately 1 a.m. Thursday. Licensed mosquito abatement technicians will dispense an ultra-low-volume spray of Zenivex, a chemical approved by federal officials to control mosquitoes in residential areas.

West Nile virus is transmitted solely by mosquitoes; only a small minority of the insect carries the disease.

The Chicago Department of Public Health has placed mosquito traps around the city. After conducting routine tests, the department determines whether an area needs to be sprayed to kill adult mosquitoes.

"When our mosquito traps indicate that the West Nile virus may pose health risks in a community, we take action quickly," said Dr. Julie Morita, the public health department commissioner.

The mosquito spray is not harmful to people or pets, but as an extra precaution, North Park residents may choose to stay indoors and close their windows while spraying is underway.

In addition to monitoring traps and spraying for adult mosquitoes, the health department also drops larvacide in catch basins to limit the mosquito population.

Residents can do their part to protect themselves:

• Use insect repellent that contains DEET, Picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
• Eliminate standing water. This includes regularly emptying water from flowerpots, gutters, pool covers, pet water dishes and birdbaths.
• Keep grass and weeds short to eliminate hiding places for adult mosquitoes.
• When outside between dusk and dawn, wear loose-fitting, light colored clothing including long pants, long sleeve shirts, socks and shoes.
• Make sure all screens, windows and doors are tight-fitting and free of holes and tears.
• Check on neighbors regularly who may need additional assistance, including the elderly.
