LAKEVIEW — After a long summer apart, what's better than giving your bestie a big hug on the first day back to school?
The answer for these girls, clearly, is nothing.
Shortly before the first day of school began Tuesday for Hawthorne Scholastic Academy in Lakeview, these two students raced toward each other from opposite ends of the field adjacent to the elementary school.

Their obvious delight in being together once again strikes a chord with anyone who fondly remembers their best buds from days of yore.
While kids these days have texting and social media to keep in touch over the long summer months, being back together in school is everything.
Time to compare binders, doodle notes to one another in school-provided planners and trade desserts in the lunchroom. Not to mention the time it will take to share summer stories and compare crushes as the school year gets underway.
And even if homework and rules damper the fun of it, at least you've got a pal to help you through it.
