LINCOLN SQUARE — According to the Red Cross, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, with a single car accident victim requiring as many as 100 pints of blood.

The only source of that blood is generous donors. On Thursday, that could be you.

In partnership with LifeSource, the Chicago Police Department is hosting a blood drive, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, at the Lincoln (20th) District headquarters, 5400 N. Lincoln Ave.

For first-time donors, here's what you need to know before giving blood:

• To donate whole blood, a person must be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds.

• Pregnant women and new mothers are ineligible to donate, as is anyone taking an antibiotic for an infection.

• Eat a low-fat, iron-rich meal at least two hours before donating. Drink lots of non-caffeinated beverages.

• No smoking at least an hour before donating. Don't chew gum or eat mints or candy immediately before or during your donation.

• Avoid strenuous activity or exercise immediately before or after donating.

Bring a photo ID and list of medications you're taking to the donation site. You'll also need to provide a list of the places you've visited outside the U.S. in the past three years.
