CHICAGO — A shooting during a robbery near Navy Pier left a 22-year-old man wounded early Saturday and police said they now believe the victim actually shot himself.

Though initially thought to be a robbery, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Twitter Saturday, that police now believe the man shot himself in the leg.

The 22-year-old man initially told police that he was walking down the street in the 600 block of East Illinois Street at 2:20 a.m. Saturday when someone walked up to him, took out a gun and said he was robbing the man, police said.

The man refused to comply with the robber, so the robber shot the man in his leg and then ran off, police said of the initial report.

Guiglielmi said that after a review of the physical evidence and surveillance, police determined teh victim who said he was shot and robbed near Navy Pier actually shot himself.

The man was taken to Northwestern Hospital, where his condition was not available but he was listed as "stable," police said.
