EDGEWATER — What's way more rock 'n' roll than a car wash? A neighborhood dog wash — and one that benefits a weeklong, music-inspired nonprofit camp for girls.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, campers from Girls Rock! Chicago will be on hand at Bark Bark Club, 5943 N. Broadway in Edgewater, to scrub pups large and small in an effort to raise funds for their volunteer-led organization.

The cost of a wash is $20 for large dogs and $10 for smaller breeds.

Additional grooming services will also be available for a fee, and the group will be selling camp merchandise.

Cassandra O'Keefe, a volunteer with the camp for the past decade and parent to a camper, said the dog wash was hoping to bring in at least $1,000, which would help cover workshops, classes and much more.

The camp specifically is aimed to empower girls and transgender and gender nonconforming youths.

No participant is ever turned away for being unable to afford the camp, and there is no limit to the number of scholarships that are given out to those in need, making fundraising extra crucial, O'Keefe said.

Twice a year, a group of 80 campers spends a week taking classes such as Gender Shredding, Media Awareness, Self Defense, Merch Making and Women in Rock History.

The camp culminates with shows at some of Chicago's major live music venues such as the Metro, Bottom Lounge and Thalia Hall.

"It truly is life changing," O'Keefe said.
