HYDE PARK — Half play, half parade, “Tall Girl and the Lightning Parade” will premiere Tuesday at the Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago before going on a tour of Chicago parks.
More than 30 artists, puppeteers, musicians and performers have collaborated the Walkabout Theater Company at the university on the adaptation of a Mayan fable. Their work will get its premiere at 7 p.m. Tuesday for the free performance at the Logan Center, 915 E. 60th St.
There have been signs something strange is coming as performers on stilts have been out practicing on the Midway Plaisance over the past two weeks while others work fiddle with puppets and work on flipping each other around in feats of acrobatics.
The story is adapted from the Tzutujil Mayan fable “The Disobedience of the Daughter of the Sun” and tells the story of Tall Girl’s courtship with the Hummingbird Boy.
More than 20 performers will premiere the free show in Hyde Park before moving on to Wicker Park and Little Village.
All performances start at 7 p.m., and the full schedule of performances includes:
• Aug. 23 and Aug. 24 at Walsh Playground Park with a parade on the 606, 1722 N. Ashland Ave.
• Aug. 26 and Aug. 27 at La Villita Park, 2800 S. Sacramento Blvd.
