COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A South Side man is accused of fatally stabbing his ex-boyfriend after the victim began dating a woman.

Sylvester McDaniels, 39, turned himself in to police Saturday — exactly two months after he allegedly stabbed 52-year-old Anthony Williams six times in the back and arm outside a Roseland house.

The men previously dated and lived together in Williams' home, Assistant State's Attorney Becky Walters said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

But by January, the couple were no longer together, and Williams moved out of his home to live with his girlfriend, prosecutors said. McDaniels stayed at Williams' home, according to Walters, because Williams wasn't able to immediately evict McDaniels.

In April, McDaniels was arrested for breaking a window at Williams' girlfriend's apartment after Williams allegedly refused to give McDaniels money, prosecutors said. A misdemeanor case is pending.

The men met again June 6 as Williams worked on a home he owns in the 11400 block of South Indiana Avenue, according to authorities.

McDaniels approached Williams "aggressively" and said, "What's up?", Walters noted. That's when McDaniels allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed Williams six times: three times in the back and three in the arm.

A witness driving down the street saw McDaniels swing a shiny object that appeared to be a knife and hit Williams at least four or five times, prosecutors said. Williams staggered backwards toward a fence and collapsed.

Williams, of the 11700 block of South Perry Avenue, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police issued an arrest warrant for McDaniels on June 7, and McDaniels turned himself in Saturday, prosecutors said. He is charged with first-degree murder.

According to his attorney, McDaniels has been living with his mother and doing temp work at a factory.

Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil on Tuesday denied McDaniels bail.
