COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An Englewood man has been charged with murdering 32-year-old Keith Jackson.

Jackson and two friends were in a minivan in the 2000 block of West 68th Place about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when Kevin Lenoir, 23, began to fire a "hail of bullets" from his front porch, Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini said during a bond hearing Friday.

Authorities believe Lenoir fired 15 to 20 bullets — one of which fatally struck Jackson in his neck.

It's not clear why Lenoir shot at the van. Prosecutors on Friday said Lenoir is a member of the Sangamon Assassin faction of the Gangster Disciples gang. In the past two years, there have been at least 25 calls for police service at Lenoir's Englewood home, which have included calls about shots fired and people shot, Santini said.

On the afternoon Jackson was killed, he and his friends were trying to pick up a female friend on Lenoir's block, prosecutors said.

The minivan driver drove slowly and circled the block once because he didn't have the woman's exact address, according to Santini. The driver eventually stopped one house west of Lenoir's residence.

That's when Lenoir pulled a gun and fired multiple shots toward the minivan from his front porch, prosecutors said. The driver sped off, but Jackson was shot in the right side of his neck, and a second victim suffered facial lacerations when a window was shot out. At least two bullets struck nearby residences, prosecutors said.

Jackson, of the 5900 block of South Sangamon Street, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 2:08 p.m. Wednesday, court records show.

When police later executed a search warrant at Lenoir's home about 8 p.m. Wednesday, Lenoir told officers "that he was the one they were looking for," Santini said. Police found a loaded .40 caliber Glock handgun and an AK47 rifle in a book bag on Lenoir's roof, according to prosecutors.

Police also found six spent .40 caliber shell casings on Lenoir's porch and front lawn.

Lenoir, who lives on the block where the shooting occurred, is charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. on Friday ordered Lenoir held without bail.
