HYDE PARK — The television show “Chiago Med” seems to have taken over Hyde Park Tuesday — including the air above.

Crews arrived to start shooting on Monday and production ramped up on Tuesday, with scenes being shot at three locations in and around the neighborhood.

A black helicopter seemed to chase medical helicopters around the University of Chicago throughout the morning, but it was for scenes of a helicopter landing on the university’s helipad, according to crew working in the neighborhood who declined to give their names because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

Hyde Parkers got a little closer to the sets at the Bridgeport Coffee café at the Hyde Park Art Center, 5020 S. Cornell Ave., where some of the baristas said they were hired as extras for the day.

Barista Paris Newbern said she was getting her first acting job on Tuesday after being cast as an extra to work the cash register she is normally behind anyway at the café.

“As long as I don’t have to say anything, I’m fine,” Newbern said.

She said she also trained one of the lead actresses to work the equipment so she could convincingly look like she was making a latte. She declined to say who the actress because she said she wanted to avoid spoilers.

Crews were expected to return to a house in Kenwood to shoot in the afternoon, where a fire broke out in a neighboring house when crews were there shooting in October.

The film crews are expected to wrap up shooting on Wednesday.
