COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Bronzeville man was driving a Penske moving truck Friday when he ran a red light and killed another driver, prosecutors said.

Wilson Jones, 27, had been heading eastbound on 33rd Boulevard when he sped through a red light Friday and slammed into a pickup truck that was going northbound on Indiana Avenue, Assistant State's Attorney Liam Reardon said during a bond hearing Monday.

The pickup truck, a Ford F350, flipped on its side and slammed into a parked car, prosecutors said. Driver Leonard Olson, a 37-year-old Schaumburg man, was rushed in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m. Friday, court records show.

Jones, meanwhile, got out of the moving truck and walked away after the crash, according to Reardon. Jones never called 911 or tried to help Olson, authorities said.

The entire incident was captured on three separate surveillance cameras.

Police soon learned the Penske moving truck had been rented to Jones' girlfriend, who lived nearby in the 400 block of East Oakwood Boulevard, prosecutors said.

Officers went to the apartment, where they found Jones, who had recently showered, according to Reardon. Jones had a cut on his hand, and police found a bloody white shirt in a bedroom, prosecutors said.

Jones later confessed that he'd been driving the Penske truck and crashed into Olson's pickup truck Friday afternoon, Reardon charged.

Jones is charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing injury or death, running a red light and failure to reduce speed. His bail on Monday was set at $75,000.
