CHICAGO — A heat wave will hit the city starting Thursday, making it feel as hot as 110 degrees at times.

The heat wave is expected to last until Saturday. The city — including the Chicago Police — will be working to help people stay safe in the heat. Officials also are reminding everyone that there are cooling centers spread throughout the city where people can drop by to cool off for free.

The cooling centers:

• Garfield Center, 10 S. Kedzie Ave.

Open all day, every day

• Englewood Center, 1140 W. 79th St.

Open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays

• King Center, 4314 S. Cottage Grove Ave.

Open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays

• North Area Center, 845 W. Wilson Ave.

Open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays

• South Chicago Center, 8650 S. Commercial Ave.

9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays

• Trina Davila Center, 4312 W. North Ave.

9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays

You can also use Chicago Public Libraries, police stations, the city's senior centers and other public buildings to cool down when those buildings are open. Call 311 for more information about cooling centers.

And here are the city's tips to keep cool at home:

• Drink at least eight glasses of water a day so you don't become dehydrated

• Use sun protection if you're outdoors

• Lessen the time you spend outdoors

• Watch out for elderly people and children in hot areas, including cars and porches
