CANARYVILLE — A dangerously hot heat wave is expected to overwhelm the city this weekend.

With days that could feel as hot as 110 degrees, Chicago Police said it’s important for seniors to drink a lot of fluids and run the air conditioner.

"I know the bills are expensive. I know that the bills creep up," said Cheryl Clark, the Deering District's senior service officer, at a Wednesday night CAPS meeting in Canaryville. "If you don't run the air conditioner and you allow your body temperature to get too warm and you're not drinking enough fluids, it does no good to worry about how to pay the bill if you're 10 feet under."

Seniors can give Chicago Police their phone numbers, she said, and officers will call to check on them.

Chicago Police advise neighborhood folks to keep an eye on nearby seniors.

“Please check on your senior neighbors, the ones who might not have a kid or somebody to check on them,” Clark said.

Weather pros say the heat wave will start Thursday with a high of 93 degrees. Humidity will make it feel more like 99 degrees, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Walker.

Friday is expected to be the hottest day. Though the temperature will only be in the upper 90s, the humidity will make it feel like 110 degrees.

"We're going to be in a heat emergency mode at the Chicago Police Department,” Clark said.

Saturday will feel like 93 degrees, and Sunday will hit about 90 degrees.
