COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An Austin shooting that killed one man and wounded another late Sunday stemmed from an argument over a parking spot, prosecutors said.
The victims, 18-year-old Artivis Gladney and a 33-year-old relative, were having a barbecue with family in the 5000 block of West Jackson Boulevard when several cars pulled up about 11:45 p.m. Sunday, prosecutors said.
Eric Black, 33, a neighbor and several other people got out of the cars, Assistant State's Attorney Elena Gottreich said during a bond hearing Wednesday.
The day before, that same neighbor had argued with the 33-year-old victim's sister-in-law over a parking spot — and threatened to come back and hurt the family, prosecutors said.
The 33-year-old victim was able to smooth things over Sunday night, Gottreich noted, and everyone got back in their cars and drove away.
But a few minutes later, Black and an accomplice came out from behind the neighbor's home and began shooting at the victims' family — fatally shooting Gladney and riddling the 33-year-old man with bullets, prosecutors said. He was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital.
Police were given a description of the shooters and soon found Black a block away carrying a loaded Glock .40 caliber handgun with a defaced serial number, according to Gottreich.
Two of the shell casings found on the scene were a positive match to Black's gun, prosecutors said.
Black, of the 5300 block of South Michigan Avenue, is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, being an armed habitual criminal and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Wednesday ordered Black held in lieu of $1 million.
