LAKEVIEW — Despite claims to the contrary, Bel-Port Liquors is still kicking.

Originally set to close in mid-May, then in mid-July, the corner store at 1362 W. Belmont Ave. will be open awhile longer — possibly into 2017.

"Tell them Joe's still in business," owner Joe Barbari said.

Barbari sued his landlord in late May, with the hopes of staying at Belmont and Southport until his lease ends February 2017.

The case is set for a status hearing Aug. 15. The landlord's attorney declined comment.

The issue complicates plans to open a new Bow Truss Coffee Roasters in the space, which founder Philip Tadros hoped to open in late 2016.

Earlier this year, Tadros floated the idea of relocating Bel-port Liquors to the smaller space behind the coffee shop, which was already set to become a second storefront in what is currently a loading area and garage.

But Barbari said the space would be too small for his business. Without room for a walk-in cooler, he said it was unworkable, especially at the leasing price offered by the building's new landlords.

Regardless of the outcome, Tadros said he wishes Barbari the best.

"I'm on the sidelines — I have no power or control to do anything [related to Barbari's lease]," he said. "I just connected him to the new landlords and they were very helpful in making him a reasonable offer, and it's in his court to accept or not."

Until the lawsuit is resolved, Bel-Port stays open, Barbari said.

"I need the money for my family," he insisted. "This guy is taking the bread out of my mouth. But look at me: I'm still here."
