BRONZEVILLE — Fans of civil rights pioneer Ida B. Wells can join other enthusiasts for a 3-mile walk around her old neighborhood Saturday, the 154th anniversary of her birthday.

GirlTrek will start the walk at 8 a.m. Saturday at the new Ellis Park field house, 707 E. 37th St. and go around the neighborhood with a stop at Wells' former home at 3624 S. Martin Luther King Drive.

Wells was a larger-than-life-figure, born into slavery just months before the Emancipation Proclamation and going on to a career as an investigative journalist condemning lynching, founding the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and challenging segregation within the women’s suffrage movement.

A public housing complex in Bronzeville was named after her until its demolition in 2011.

The walk is free and open to the public.
