LINCOLN PARK — Changes are coming to the 2000 block of North Clark Street as two residential developments and a jewelry shop prepare to join the stretch.

A developer wants to build a five-story residential building at 2050 N. Clark St., a site currently occupied by the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus.

The plan, which includes 32 residential units and 31 parking spaces, is headed to the city's Plan Commission on July 21 for approval. The site is currently zoned for a shopping district.

Nicolas A. Long of the law firm ReedSmith, who is listed as the permit applicant, deferred questions to Novak Construction, which declined to comment.

The planned development is just a few doors down from another controversial project at the site of Buddy's parking garage, 2036 N. Clark St.

For that project, the developer plans to tear down the 225-stall garage and build a 65-foot-tall, 10-unit development made up of $1 million-$3 million condos and 28 parking spaces. It's unwelcome news for some neighbors, who argue that countless residents in the area depend on the garage, which they say is the only one of its kind on the busy, tourist-heavy stretch.

"The parking garage is going away. Nothing can change that," Robert Krupa, property owner and developer, previously said. "We paid a lot of money for this property. The taxes are now triple."

Sandwiched in between the two projects, a new jewelry store, Suuri, 2042 N. Clark St., is preparing to open its doors. Signs are affixed to the storefront windows, which target this summer for opening.
