WOODLAWN — A Chicago author is launching a new book fair in Woodlawn for authors of the African diaspora.

The July 16 Soulful Chicago Book Fair will offer blocks of books and author events along 61st Street between Cottage Grove Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive.

The event is the brainchild of Asadah Kirkland, the author of “Beating Black Kids” and who has been active in the literary industry for more than 20 years.

Kirkland’s vision is a “gathering of the griots,” the term for a type of West African storyteller and historian. The event she’s coordinated brings together more than 100 black authors along with workshops for aspiring writers and music.

Musicians Eric Roberson, Maggie Brown, David Boykin and others are scheduled to perform.

The book fair runs from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
