CHICAGO — Police suspect a 15-year-old boy of shooting a man in the leg Wednesday before stealing his car and using it in a string of violent robberies.

The Chicago Police Department on Friday morning printed the boy's name in a news release claiming the teen had been charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking and was slated to appear in bond court Friday.

But prosecutors Friday afternoon said the teen has not been charged. Rather, he was recommended to juvenile court for charges, according to a spokeswoman with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. That means prosecutors now have three weeks to determine whether there's enough evidence to pursue charges. The teen will appear in court later this month.

Because the suspect is a minor who has not been charged with a crime, DNAinfo Chicago has removed his name from our website.

Police believe the 15-year-old shot a 27-year-old man during a robbery in South Chicago before taking off in the victim's car Wednesday morning, according to a news release.

The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Masonic Medical Center, where he was treated for a broken femur, police said.

Five minutes after the shooting, the 15-year-old and an accomplice were reportedly responsible for another shooting at 84th Street and Mackinaw Avenue, where a 24-year-old man was injured, according to ABC7 Chicago.

The stolen car was then subsequently used in at least two convenience-store robberies in suburban Summit, including one that ended in the shooting death of a store clerk, according to CBS Chicago.

Police released surveillance photos that they believed showed the 15-year-old and at least two others involved in the shootings and subsequent robberies and asked the public on Thursday for help finding the suspects.
