LINCOLN PARK — A developer who tore down two multi-unit buildings on Orchard Street with plans to build "mega-mansions" in their place is now looking for a buyer or two, according to real estate listings.
This week BGD&C listed two custom mega-mansion opportunities at 1903 and 1909 N. Orchard St.— a hot stretch of East Lincoln Park that continues to see more super-sized homes.
The Chicago-based developer is prepared to either build one home across all four lots or build two separate mansions, depending on the buyer, according to Charles Grode, principal and vice-president at BGD&C.
BGD&C is asking $15.5 million to build a custom home at 1909 N. Orchard St. and $9.5 million to build one at 1903 N. Orchard St. If sold, the homes could become among the most expensive in the neighborhood.
The developer bought the 11-unit condominium building at 1909 N. Orchard St. in 2013 for about $4.5 million, according to a Crain's report.
A few years later, the developer bought the apartment building at 1903 N. Orchard St. for about $1.8 million, according to county records.
These proposed developments reflect a growing trend in the neighborhood of multi-lot buildings. In early 2015, a Lincoln Park home development sparked debate about the merits of mega-mansions after a single house was built on seven residential lots.
