WRIGLEY FIELD — A fan hurt himself at Wrigley Field after attempting to jump onto the baseball field during an almost two-hour rain delay Thursday.

Prior to the game starting at 8:40 p.m., the man tried to jump from the Wrigley Field bleachers and was injured, the Cubs said.

He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, but his condition was not immediately available. A Chicago police spokesman said he hadn't been informed of the incident late Thursday.

The team said it would be in contact with the man's family moving forward.

Fans and media reports suggest the man was severely injured in the fall. On Twitter, @JoelMcKinnon said he was sitting five seats away from the man.

"He tried to leap onto field, clipped the basket and flipped onto the warning track," the tweets read. "Had on Mets jersey, and had already been told twice to get off the wall, as he had been sitting on it and straddling it."

From his seat, the witness said he saw the injured man appear to be breathing, but not responding or moving once Cubs officials and paramedics arrived.

The Cubs vs. Atlanta Braves was set to begin at 7:05 p.m., but a downpour arrived earlier than expected Thursday night. The game began one hour and 35 minutes later.

The Cubs and Wrigley Field are 95 percent owned by a trust established for the benefit of the family of Joe Ricketts, owner and CEO of DNAinfo.com. Joe Ricketts has no direct involvement in the management of the iconic team.
