Call 911 If Brudder's Has Too Many People, Alderman Says

CHICAGO — The Irving Park bar where a bouncer was killed earlier this year isn't working with the community, the alderman said, so he's urging the community to fight back.

Bouncer Angel Ortiz Jr. was shot and killed at the bar, 3600 N. Pulaski, on April 2. Prosecutors have said Felix Valentin, 28, had just been kicked out of Brudder's when he shot at the bar, fatally hitting Ortiz. The shooting left the bar devastated and it was temporarily closed.

Brudder's was re-opened on April 21 after making a verbal agreement with the city and police to help prevent violence, said Owen Brugh, chief of staff for Ald. John Arena (45th), at the time.

The city tried to create a plan of operations that "would have included provisions banning DJs, improving security outside the bar at closing and discourage congregating in the alley," said Arena in a monthly newsletter. The owner of Brudder's has refused to agree to the changes, Arena said.

Now, Arena is asking people to call police if it looks like there are more than 60 people in the bar.

"Due to a previous court case, the bar has a limit on their occupancy of 60 people, not including employees," Arena wrote in his newsletter. "The 17th District Police have been informed of the limit and are ready to enforce it."

A spokesman for Brudder's could not immediately be reached. Owner George Michael has previously said the shooting did not represent what normally happens at Brudder's.

"We're a simple, normal bar where somebody did something stupid," Michael said after the April 21 re-opening.
