CHICAGO — A 17-year-old shot and killed his cousin during a fight, prosecutors said.

Keshawn Freeman has been charged with murder and aggravated battery. He got into a fight with his cousin, Latrell McMahon, 18, and killed McMahon and wounded a second cousin, prosecutors said.

On June 18, McMahon was in a car being driven by his relative, Naomi Freeman, when Keshawn Freeman called Naomi Freeman and asked her to stop by the 0-100 block of South Springfield Avenue, prosecutors said.

Naomi Freeman drove there and began to talk to Keshawn Freeman through the window, prosecutors said. At one point, Keshawn Freeman, not knowing McMahon was in the back of the car, told Naomi Freeman he was going to "beat [McMahon's] a--," prosecutors said. McMahon heard the comment and asked, "What?"

The back door of the car was opened and McMahon and Keshawn Freeman began to fight and Freeman punched McMahon's face, prosecutors said. McMahon tried to close the car door and told Naomi Freeman to drive.

Keshawn Freeman took out a gun and fired it repeatedly at the car while Naomi Freeman drove off, prosecutors said.

McMahon was shot in his chest and another relative who was in the car was shot in his leg, prosecutors said. McMahon was killed but the second victim, who was 17, was treated at Mount Sinai Hospital and later released.

Multiple witnesses identified Keshawn Freeman as the shooter. Freeman later called the second relative wounded in the shooting and told him to tell police the shooting was in self-defense, prosecutors said. McMahon was unarmed, prosecutors said.

Freeman's attorney said the teen turned himself into police and had reason to think McMahon had a gun.

Judge Laura Sullivan set Freeman's bail at $2 million. His next court date is June 27.
