COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — After an Englewood man was punched in his face in February, he pulled out a gun and fatally shot the assailant, prosecutors said Thursday.

James Green, 33, was arrested on a warrant and charged this week in the murder of 42-year-old Edward Flowers.

The men were inside an Austin business in the 500 block of South Cicero Avenue Feb. 1 when Flowers walked up to Green and punched Green once in the face about 12:30 a.m., Assistant State's Attorney Brian Whang said during a bond hearing Thursday.

It's not clear why Flowers punched Green.

As Flowers walked away, Green pulled out a gun and shot the man once, prosecutors said. Flowers fell to the ground. Green is then accused of standing over the man, pointing a gun at Flowers' head and pulling the trigger one more time.

Multiple witnesses identified Green as the shooter, Whang said, and surveillance video inside the business captured the fatal shooting.

Flowers was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital later that morning, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police issued a warrant in February, and Green was arrested carrying a gun in Madison, Wis., on March 4, prosecutors said. Green was extradited this week to Chicago, where he is charged with first-degree murder.

Cook County Judge James Brown on Thursday ordered Green, of the 6400 block of South Lowe Avenue, held in lieu of $2 million bail.
