65-Year-Old Woman Shot When She Tried To Pepper Spray Armed Robber: Police

CHICAGO — A shooting in Auburn Gresham early Thursday left a 65-year-old woman wounded after an attempted robbery, police said.

At 12:40 a.m., the woman was standing at a bus stop in the 8200 block of South Ashland Avenue when a man in a gray hoodie walked up and said he was robbing her, said Officer Laura Amezaga, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The woman reached into her purse and took out a can of pepper spray and the man shot at her, Amezaga said.

The woman was hit in the right arm and right side. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where her condition was not released but she was listed as "stable," Amezaga said.

No one was in custody.
