WOODLAWN — A three-year-old was shot in the shoulder Sunday night in a drive-by shooting in Woodlawn, leaving the child in critical condition, police said.

The child was in a car at 6:15 p.m. in the 6100 block of South Kimbark Avenue when someone in a passing car opened fire, hitting the child in the right shoulder, according to police.

Police said the child was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and later transferred to Comer Children’s Hospital and the last condition provided to police as of Sunday night was “critical.”

Few details about the shooting have been released. Police were unable to provide a description of any of the people in either car, the make or model of either car and were still unsure who took the child to the hospital.

Both the Chicago Police Department and the University of Chicago police responded to a call of shots fired at 6:15 p.m. Both departments said the motive for the shooting remains unknown and there is no information about any suspects.

The block has seen increasingly severe problems this year, with a daytime shootout as school was letting out on May 24 where no one was injured. On May 17, an 18-year-old man was shot in the leg on the same block and found a block away by police.
