BRIGHTON PARK — A teacher and one-time contestant on Mexico's version of "The Voice" died Saturday, two days after being shot at his Brighton Park performing arts school, officials said.

At 10:15 p.m. Thursday, Alejandro "Jano" Fuentes was in a car in the 4300 block of South Archer Avenue when a man walked up, took out a gun and ordered him to get out of the car, said Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. Fuentes resisted and the man fired the gun.

Fuentes was hit in his head and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, Pacheco said.

The shooter ran away a little then got into a car and drove off, Pacheco said.

Fuentes, who lived on the same block where he was shot, was pronounced dead just after 2 p.m. Saturday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

WLS-TV reported that Fuentes was celebrating his 45th birthday at Tras Bambalinas School, where he taught, the day he was shot. A video of the celebration was posted to the school's Facebook page:

Fuentes appeared on the show "La Voz" in 2011, according to WLS-TV.

A message posted to the page Saturday night reads, "Today the Latino community lost a great artist, teacher and friend, but above all, a great human being."

GoFundMe page has been set up to collect donations for Fuentes' family.

No one was in custody in the shooting, police said.
