CHICAGO — An all-girls Catholic high school in Belmont Cragin and a Catholic elementary school in Hegewish will soon close, the Archdiocese of Chicago announced Thursday.

Notre Dame High School for Girls in Belmont Cragin and St. Florian School in Hegewisch will close at the end of the school year due to declining enrollment and financial struggles.

The announcement comes as the Archdiocese considers school and parish closings and consolidations to deal with declining school enrollment and church attendance. Church officials have announced a number of closures since 2014, including plans to close three Pilsen churches.

Only 31 students were enrolled at Notre Dame, 3115 N. Mason Ave., for next school year, the Archdiocese said. St. Florian, 13110 S. Baltimore Ave., had 49 students enrolled for next year.

The decision was affirmed by Archbishop Blase Cupich, who "saw no reason not to accept this recommendation" to close the schools, according to the Archdiocese's statement.

Church workers will help the affected families find alternative school accommodations for next year.

The Archdiocese of Chicago educates more than 79,000 in 229 schools across Cook and Lake counties.
