Northeastern To Hold Vigil Tuesday For Orlando Victims

NORTH PARK — Northeastern Illinois University will host a vigil Tuesday, just past noon, to remember the 49 victims of the mass shooting in Orlando.

The vigil is open to the public, and neighbors are welcome to attend, according to NEIU spokesman Mike Dizon, who posted the event to a North Park neighborhood Facebook page.

Students, faculty, staff and members of the community will gather in Village Square on NEIU's main campus (see map) at 12:10 p.m.

"We hope you can join us in our solidarity with the victims' families, the City of Orlando and the LGBTQA community," Dizon said.

Nearby Peterson Elementary, 5510 N. Christiana Ave., is also showing its support for those killed and their loved ones.

Back in December 2015, members of the Peterson community tied "ribbons of peace" to the school's fencing in response to Donald Trump's anti-Muslim rants.

Those weathered bows were replaced with fresh strands — in all the colors of the rainbow — on Monday.

"All are welcome at Peterson," Principal Kate Kane wrote in a series of tweets on social media. "#Lovewins."
