OLD IRVING PARK — Urban chicken keeping is gaining in popularity, but where to start?

Find out which breeds of fowl are best for Chicago, how to build a coop and more at Pursuit Supply Company's intro class for newcomers to the world of back yard chickens.

The class is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday, 4316 W. Irving Park Road. Cost is $20, with online registration still open.

Urban chicken pro Kelli Wefenstette will lead the session, covering everything from where to buy chickens to creating an "end of life" plan for your birds.

Keeping chickens and other livestock animals is legal in Chicago. Chicken owners can sell and eat the eggs, but they can't kill the chickens themselves; instead they must take them to a certified butcher.
