DOWNTOWN — Chicago's beaches gained a lot of attention for all the wrong reasons this week: They were full of trash.

The three-day weekend left many beaches strewn with garbage, and the city had to resort to reminding people to throw their trash out in trash cans and not in the sand.

People were bothered by the post-holiday litter. Really bothered.

On Neighborhood Square, where readers chatted about the story, the word "pig" has been used at least 10 times (almost 1/10 of the comments). Others said the trash was an embarrassment to the entire city. Some blamed suburbanites, Millennials, the City Council or a lack of trash cans for the litter.

But here's the best part: People offered solutions for how to curb future trash issues.

The easiest — and most suggested — fix? Bring your own bag to put your trash in. It sounds just simple enough to work.

Have solutions of your own? Want to talk about your experiences with litter (or maybe a lack of it?) at Chicago beaches? Head to Neighborhood Square to join the conversation.
