NORTH CENTER — Are North Center residents willing to trade parking spaces for an active public space?

That's one of the questions on the table as various entities join forces in the latest effort to improve the neighborhood's Town Square, at Damen and Belle Plaine avenues.

The 47th Ward Office, Northcenter Chamber of Commerce and Northcenter Neighborhood Association have developed a survey (click here) to collect feedback from residents on the types of activities and amenities they'd like to see in Town Square.

In addition to concerts, seating, landscaping and free wi-fi, one of the options neighbors are being asked to weigh in on is: "Would you support permanently closing Belle Plaine between Lincoln and Damen to vehicular traffic and parking for an expansion of the Town Square?"

Precedent can be found in Lincoln Square, where Giddings Street once intersected with Lincoln Avenue. That intersection, closed off in the 1970s, is now a beloved community plaza.

Responses to the North Center survey will help shape the potential solutions that will be presented for review later this year, according Ald. Ameya Pawar (47th) in his weekly letter to constituents.

Paper copies of the survey are available at the ward office, 4243 N. Lincoln Ave.
