WOODLAWN — A 16-year-old boy was found fatally shot in Woodlawn Thursday, and officers who originally thought the boy shot himself are now ruling the case a homicide.

Around 1:10 p.m., the boy was found in the 6100 block of South Evans Avenue with a gunshot wound in his head, according to police. The boy was pronounced dead on scene, police said.

Police originally said the boy had accidentally shot himself and were conducting a death investigation, but detectives now believe someone shot the teen, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, Chicago Police spokesman.

A person of interest in the case is being questioned, Sweeney said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the boy as Damarcus Williams, of the 6100 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue.
