NEAR NORTH SIDE — Last week, Sgt. Cynthia Schumann hosted her last CAPS meeting.

Schumann retired May 15 after working for the Chicago Police department for 29 years, more than half of which she spent working at the Near North District.

"It's been a well-rounded, interesting career," Schumann told neighbors at the meeting held last week at St. James Lutheran Church, 2102 N. Fremont Ave.

"I've done a lot. I know times are uneasy, but there are more pros than cons" to working for Chicago Police, she said.

For the entirety of her career, Schumann worked on the North Side.

She began her career in the Town Hall District as a narcotics detective and went on to work in the gang division in the Lincoln District. She eventually landed in her most recent position in the Near North District as a community policing sergeant. As such, she's hosted countless CAPS meetings and worked with neighbors to improve public safety.

"It's been a pleasure to serve you," she said at the meeting.

While working for the Near North district, Schumann also taught criminal justice part-time at National Louis University. She said she plans to focus on teaching now that she's retired.

She also mentioned her "passion" for curbing domestic violence, which she hopes will manifest into a committee chairperson role with the Near North district.
