LINCOLN PARK — An 1890s-era Romanesque Revival-style mansion with historic features, including a pit that was likely used for bootlegging, is for sale in Lincoln Park for $8,875,000

In 1895, the home at 632 W. Deming Place was designed by Chicago architect Edmund Krause, who is known for designing the PrivateBank Theatre in the Loop and other mansions in Lincoln Park and on the Gold Coast.

At one point, the home was divided into six apartments, but the latest owner converted it back to a single-family home and hired von Weise Associates to do a two-year-plus renovation, which included updating the kitchen and the bathrooms and restoring many of the home's historic features, including the original stained glass and ornate wooden stairwell.

"Nothing feels tacked on, as we sometimes see in vintage homes," said Caroline Moellering, a Coldwell Banker agent who is co-listing the home with Suzanne Gignilliat.

During the renovation, the architect discovered a "pit-like structure" in front of the house on the ground floor that was likely used for bootlegging. One of the owners was charged with bootlegging, according to Moellering.

The home has six bedrooms — five of them with en suite bathrooms — and a coach house, which was used as an office by the previous owner.

Other features on the 13,000-square-foot property include a sport court, a wine cellar, a dog run, a three-car garage and a long driveway for additional parking, complete with snow-melting technology.

In 1892, Jacob Gross, a German immigrant banker, bought the vacant parcel on Deming for $10,000.
