DOWNTOWN — Chicagoans are leaving college with a degree — and a ton of student loan debt.

Chicagoans have an average of $37,445 in student debt, according to a study from WalletHub. That means Chicago ranks in the top 22 percent of United States cities with the most student loan debt.

Outside of the city, people in Illinois who graduated from a four-year university in 2014 had an average of $28,984 in student debt, according to the Institute For College Access and Success. About 67 percent of those graduates had debt.

It could be worse: In Voorhees, New Jersey, students have an average of $46,423 in debt ... but the median income for people 25 to 44 years old is just $26,711, according to WalletHub. In Chicago, the median income for  25 to 44 year olds is $56,391.

People struggling with student debt should look into income-based repayment plans and should contact the institution that loaned them their money, according to the experts at WalletHub.

Or maybe just consider moving to Saratoga, Texas, where people have an average of $30,678 in student loan debt while making $250,000, according to WalletHub.
