CHICAGO — A 51-year-old man was fatally stabbed as he tried to thwart a robbery in Kenwood early Monday, according to police.
The man was on a rear porch in the 4500 block of South Drexel Boulevard at 12:33 a.m. when a robber approached, said Officer Ana Pacheco, Chicago Police spokeswoman.
He then fought with the would-be robber, who took out a knife and stabbed the man in his chest, Pacheco said.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene, Pacheco said.
Remains of the police tape used to section off the crime scene remained near the porch where the man was killed late Monday morning. A detective was parked in the alley and was inquiring with the next-door building's property manager about security cameras that may have caught the fatal attack.
The incident took place in a quiet block along busy Drexel Boulevard, and the robbery attempt and stabbing took place behind a locked gate.
Ernest Prock, who moved to Kenwood four months ago, was working third shift when the attack happened near his apartment in the same complex.
"Wow," he said after hearing the crime was a botched robbery. "I have never lived on the East Side before now but I've lived everywhere else. This is a very nice block."
No arrests have been made, police said.
