Shooter in Fatal South Side Bar Fight Held Without Bail, Authorities Say

COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A heated argument at a South Side bar turned deadly earlier this month when two men pulled guns and murdered 31-year-old Marvin Lee, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Claudious Williams, 32, was arrested this week and charged with first-degree murder in the April 7 attack, which happened about 2:45 a.m. outside Murphy's Lounge, 7640 S. Cottage Grove Ave.

Police are still looking for the second gunman, Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini said during a bond hearing Wednesday.

According to prosecutors, Lee and several friends were leaving Murphy's about 2:45 a.m. April 7 when they got into an argument with another group of people.

The argument eventually subsided, Santini said, and Lee headed to his car to wait for a friend.

After about 10 minutes, Williams and three other people approached Lee's car, prosecutors said. Lee stepped out of the car, and one of his friends, a 31-year-old man, walked toward Lee to stand by him, Santini added.

That's when one of Williams' accomplices started a physical fight with Lee and his friend, prosecutors said.

At some point, Williams pulled out a gun and shot Lee at close range, striking him in the right side of his head, Santini said. One of Williams' accomplices also pulled a gun and fired it toward Lee and the friend, prosecutors said.

Lee was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. His 31-year-old friend was not injured, prosecutors said.

Surveillance footage and professional photos taken the evening of the murder place Williams inside the bar, Santini said.

Video footage of the actual murder depicts a man who has the same body shape as Williams, "a large well-built man," Santini said. Additionally, the shooter is wearing distinctive shoes and a unique belt buckles — all of which Williams was wearing earlier in the evening inside the bar, prosecutors said.

Williams now faces first-degree murder and attempted-murder charges.

Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan on Wednesday ordered him held without bail.
