HYDE PARK — The University of Chicago is hosting an old fashioned debate on Tuesday on whether the Second Amendment to the Constitution should be amended.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education is hosting the debate on the “right to bear arms” at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th St.

Zachary Elkins, an associate professor of government at the University of Texas at Austin, will argue for the motion. He is the co-author of “The Endurance of National Constitutions” and an expert on institutional reform and changes to national documents like the Constitution.

Clark Neily, a senior attorney at the Institute for Justice, will argue against the motion. He privately represented the plaintiffs in the District of Columbia v. Heller in 2008, the Supreme Court case that ruled the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to keep a gun for self-defense.

The debate is free and open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required by visiting the event website.
