CHICAGO — A 40-year-old Chicago Lawn man broke into the home of an elderly man and shot him after a scuffle, police said.

Martin Hayes was arrested last week after he made his way into a 69-year-old man's home and shot him after being discovered by the homeowner, police said in a news release.

Hayes broke into the home in the 3600 block of West 57th Place at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 28, police said.

When he was discovered by the 69-year-old man, the two began fighting and Hayes shot the man in his wrist, police said.

Hayes, of the 6400 block of South Spaulding Avenue, was arrested and charged with one felony count of home invasion causing injury, according to police. The man is currently on parole for a 2013 burglary conviction, police said.
