The Shedd's Cane Toad Is A Super Sloppy Eater — And It's Awesome (VIDEO)

By Kelly Bauer | April 29, 2016 10:53am

DOWNTOWN — The Shedd Aquarium is celebrating Save the Frogs Day with a video that shows how amazing — and also, a little gross — it is to watch cane toads eat.

A cane toad's tongue is typically 6 or 7 inches long — as long as its body — and the toad uses it to snatch crickets, worms and other delicious (?) bugs. But first, the toad taps its toe to distract its prey.

Of course, the toad's manners could use a little work. A new video from the Shedd shows the amphibian letting worms wriggle around in his mouth.

Watch the video:

Saturday is Save the Frogs Day, the Shedd said, and the aquarium is encouraging people to help frogs and toads with small changes: Take shorter showers, grow a garden and keep it pesticide-free, don't use chopsticks from takeout restaurants (harvesting them can harm the amphibians' homes) and use public transportation and walk or bike more often.

You can also participate in a Great Lake Actions Day and help clean up the spots where frogs and toads live, the Shedd said.
